From Training to CompetitionOur Squad Double programme is where gymnasts make the exciting move into competitive gymnastics. Training twice a week, they work on floor and vault as their main focus, while also beginning to explore beam and bars when ready. These sessions are invitation-only, ensuring every gymnast is ready for the structure and pace of squad training. It’s a proud step forward that brings new challenges, new skills, and the opportunity to represent the club in competitions. |
What to ExpectSquad gymnasts train in small groups with expert coaches, focusing on: Floor routines — power, precision, and performance. Vault techniques — safe landings and progressive skills. Strength and conditioning — core work, flexibility drills, and endurance. Beam & Bar opportunities — once gymnasts are confident in floor and vault, they can “give it a go” on the other apparatus at competitions. Competition preparation — learning how to present routines, deal with nerves, and enjoy the buzz of performance. |
The Journey - Training is twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays (3.5–4 hours across the week).
- Gymnasts may first join our development group (Year 5+) alongside the squad, space permitting. - As confidence and ability grow, gymnasts are invited to represent North Leeds Gymnastics Academy at regional competitions. These sessions are fun, challenging, and highly rewarding — giving every child the chance to push their potential while staying part of a supportive team. |
Watching my granddaughter grow from her very first forward roll to competing with real confidence has been amazing. The coaches at NLGA have supported her every step of the way, she’s not just learned gymnastics, she’s learned to believe in herself.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do gymnasts get invited to Squad Double?
Invites are based on a mix of things: ability, attitude, consistency, and coach recommendation.
We’re looking for gymnasts who are ready for more focused training, enjoy the challenge, and show a positive mindset, not just those who can nail a move first time.

What competitions will my child take part in?
Squad Double gymnasts typically take part in friendly invitational competitions, including in-house events and low-pressure local meets.
The focus is on performance, progress and experience, not medals. Coaches choose events that suit the gymnast’s stage and confidence.

How are training groups split during Squad sessions?
Sessions are structured but flexible. Gymnasts are usually grouped by age and ability, and we rotate between apparatus to make sure everyone gets time on each.
Coaches adjust groupings based on what each child needs that day, whether it’s building a new skill or perfecting form.

Do gymnasts need extra kit or uniform for competitions?
Yes, for competitions, gymnasts need a club leotard, and sometimes a tracksuit or T-shirt for warm-ups.
We’ll let you know what’s needed well in advance, and we try to keep costs reasonable where we can. You won’t need to buy everything at once.

What’s the difference between Squad Double and Squad Triple?
Squad Double is our first step into structured squad training and competition.
Squad Triple is a progression for gymnasts showing strong commitment, skill development, and readiness for more advanced routines and regional-level competitions.
In short: Double is about building the base. Triple is about taking it further but both are still supportive, team-led environments.

From Double to TripleGymnasts who thrive in Squad Double may be invited to progress to Squad Triple; a step up in both training hours and challenge.
Triple offers broader competitive opportunities, including more advanced routines, regional events, and deeper skill development. It’s ideal for those who show strong commitment, love the process of training, and are ready to push themselves a little further. |
