A Fun First Step into GymnasticsOur Gym Stars Early Years classes are the perfect introduction to gymnastics. Designed for Reception and Key Stage 1 children, these sessions give little ones the chance to run, jump, balance and roll in a safe and supportive environment. Children take part without parents in the class. That independence builds focus and confidence, while giving them the space to make new friends and develop social skills. |
What to ExpectLed by our team of energetic coaches, every class follows a set programme that blends fun with structure: - Floor & Vault basics like rolls, jumps and balances. - Time on beam, bars and air track to build variety and confidence. - Strength and flexibility work suited to their age, from bridges to handstands against the wall. - A chance to work towards our Development Awards scheme, celebrating progress at every step. We put safety first, skills are always spotted and supported by our coaches as children grow more independent. |
Skills They’ll BuildBy the end of Gym Stars, most children will be confidently performing: - Forward rolls, cartwheels and handstands. - Balancing and walking on the beam. - Vault skills like straddle on and basic jumps. - Strength and flexibility moves such as bridges, dish and arch holds. By mastering these fundamentals early on, children gain the strength, confidence, and body awareness that will support them in more advanced gymnastics as they grow. |
North Leeds Gymnastics Academy has helped my daughter grow in confidence and skill more than we could have imagined. She’s gone from being a little unsure at her first session to absolutely loving gymnastics, now she’s a real superstar who can’t wait to get to class every week.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should my child wear for Gym Stars classes?
Comfort is key. Your child can wear a leotard, unitard, or a t-shirt with shorts or leggings, anything that allows them to move freely. Please make sure long hair is tied back and all jewellery is removed before the session for safety. A club t-shirt is provided once they’re settled in, and official club kit is available to purchase later if you wish.
Do parents stay and watch the session?
For Gym Stars, children take part in the session independently. This helps them build confidence, concentration, and social skills with their peers. Coaches are always close by to guide and support them, and parents are welcome to stay nearby until their child feels comfortable.
How do the Development Awards scheme work?
Our Development Awards scheme celebrates each child’s progress as they master new skills. Every level includes 30 skills across floor, vault, beam, and bars. Once a gymnast performs a skill consistently and with good technique, they move on to the next level and can choose to purchase a certificate and rosette as a reward. It’s a fun way to recognise effort and achievement, no matter how small.
What happens if my child is nervous or shy?
That’s perfectly normal, many children are at first! Our coaches are experienced at helping young gymnasts settle in gently, offering encouragement and support throughout the class. We start with simple, playful activities to help them build trust and confidence at their own pace. Most children relax and start enjoying themselves within a few sessions.
Can my child move into the Superstars programme afterwards?
Yes! As they grow in confidence and ability, Gym Stars can progress into our Gym Superstars programme for Year 3 and above. Superstars classes offer longer sessions, more advanced skills, and the chance to try additional apparatus, it’s the natural next step for children who love gymnastics and want to keep developing.
From Stars to SuperstarsChildren who enjoy Gym Stars and are ready for a little more challenge can progress to our Gym Superstars classes. Here, they’ll build on the core skills they’ve learned, developing strength, flexibility, and confidence while beginning to explore more complex movements and routines.
Our Gym Superstars programme offers longer sessions and a wider range of apparatus, helping gymnasts take their abilities to the next level in a fun, supportive environment. It’s the perfect next step for those who love gymnastics and want to keep growing their skills. |
