The NLGA Hair Style

A Simple Hairstyle Guide for Competitions & Displays
Picture
At North Leeds Gymnastics Academy, we want our gymnasts to feel confident and proud when they step onto the floor. A simple, consistent hairstyle keeps everyone looking smart, avoids hair getting in the way, and helps build that sense of team spirit.

Parent Tips:
  • What you’ll need: A hairbrush, bobbles, grips, an NLGA scrunchie, and a little hairspray.
  • How long it takes: Allow around 15–20 minutes at first - it gets much quicker once you’ve done it a few times.
  • Short hair? Don’t worry. Just speak to a coach - the key is neat, secure hair that won’t distract your gymnast.
  • Top tip: Try a practice run before competition day. It makes the real thing feel easy and takes the pressure off.

Stage 1: Brush and Part

Brush the hair so it’s smooth and tangle-free. Create a zigzag parting down the centre, then take the left side and secure it into a neat ponytail with a bobble.

Stage 2: Plait the Right Side

Starting at the front hairline on the right side, begin a plait. Keep the sections snug as you work around the head, then braid right down to the ends.

Stage 3: Plait the Left Side

Repeat on the left side, starting from the middle of the zigzag parting. Braid tightly against the head and continue to the tips so it mirrors the first side.

Stage 4: Join the Plaits

With both sides finished, bring the two braids together at the nape of the neck. Tie them with a bobble so they sit neatly and feel secure.

Stage 5: Finish the Bun

Twist the two braids together and wrap them into a bun. Pin or tie firmly so it stays put, then slip on the NLGA scrunchie for a smart, team-ready look.

Don’t worry if it’s not perfect, what matters is that hair is tidy, secure, and gymnasts feel ready to perform. Coaches are always happy to give quick tips if you’re unsure.
